In addition to being “one of the most vivid moments in mainstream TV,” boys show host Eric Kripke called it, Prime Video’s “Herogasm” episode also earned another unique honor: It gave Amazon executives the first pause for a moment involving two unlikely adulterers in a super orgy. (Irrelevant, but: did you also see the invisible cameo in this episode?)
“We had a lot of discussions this season about the Deep and Octopus scene,” Kripke told TVLine as Annie caught them.
“For some crazy reason, Standards have a policy against bestiality. They’re really nervous,” Kripke said with a laugh. “The discussion about that scene and how we did that scene actually set off a lot of alarm bells on a lot of different levels at Amazon because you’re not supposed to show people fucking animals, I get it. But my pitch to them was always ridiculous [that] It wouldn’t be out of place in a Farrelly Brothers movie. So it’s hard to call it lascivious bestiality. This is ridiculous. I don’t even think octopuses have holes under them, as far as I know. So there’s a lot of discussion about what a lens is, what can we do, what can we get away with? (According to Prime Video’s X-ray trivia feature, the scene was actually shot with puppets and then replaced with CGI by the VFX team.)
“But it really became a conversation for the first time, and they had to push it up the ladder,” Kripke continued. In fact, according to the show host, boys Partly responsible for the streaming giant and even has a standards and practices department, which is more typical of a broadcast network.

“We just couldn’t do all the gimmicks we wanted to do,” laments Kripke. “I remember at some point there was a discussion about some kind of aquatic animal, Creatures from Black Laketype supe in the pool, having sex underwater. This has been discussed before and I don’t think we can do it. We’re going to make a joke with these spewing massive liquid fire hoses. There will be a female and she will be sprayed on Hughie and it will be an ongoing joke. Then we kind of ran out of time, so it all combined into poor breast milk. “
Given the erotic nature of the episode, Kripke also noted that “several” intimacy coordinators were on set during filming and took every precaution to ensure everyone felt protected.
“Honestly, I was horrified the whole shoot because you have so many nude and mock actors,” Kripke admits. “The possibility of something really going wrong was so terrifying to me that everyone from the top down on the production said, ‘We have to be very right about this, be very professional, and be like the police in every way, to Make sure it’s a safe space for everyone. So we did.”
