  • Nine-year-old Shih Tzu diets and does spa exercises
  • The new owner says the dog now likes swimming and is more lively

A chubby dog who struggled to walk after ballooning over two stones has transformed after losing a third of his body weight – and now enjoys swimming in the sea.

Queenie, a 9-year-old Shih Tzu, weighed a whopping 2 stone and four pounds, about the weight of a medium microwave, when she entered an animal charity in Wales a year ago.

She is so heavy that she can barely walk from one end of the garden to the other – desperately in need of losing weight.

Thankfully, with the help of her foster carer, Queenie lost more than a third of her weight and now weighs just 1 stone and 6 pounds after following a strict diet and exercise regime.

She also found a new permanent home after her previous owner struggled to take care of her properly.

Luckily, Hope Rescue in South Wales found her a foster carer named Kath Robbins, who is a volunteer.

Queenie then underwent a rigorous diet and spa exercise program, and over time began to lose weight.

Now, photos show her transformation, as Queenie has been thin to a stone and 6 pounds, and has the freedom to move – even enjoys paddling in the sea.

Queenie was even adopted by Kath’s mother, Terry Robbins, who fell in love with her.

Laura Hallsmith of Hope Rescue said: “When Queenie first came into our care, she could barely move and was completely unable to walk.

“As Queenie started losing weight, her personality started to shine. She likes people and other dogs, and she loves taking pictures. She’s a very different dog these days.

While Queenie was beloved by her previous owners, they had struggled to take care of her, and her weight had increased dramatically.

When she was first brought to Hope Rescue in May 2021, she weighed more than two stone and was immediately placed on a strict diet.

Since her muscles can’t handle the stress of walking, she also has hydrotherapy to get her moving.

In January, Queenie embarked on her weight loss journey and found a forever home with Kath’s mother, Terry.

Terry said: “Her lovely little face looked sad, clinging to that big body…”

At her most recent weigh-in, the Hope Rescue team was thrilled to learn that Queenie had dropped to six pounds a stone, meaning she had lost a third of her body weight.

The puppy is now healthier, more comfortable and in love with her new home.

Terry added: “It’s amazing to see her bubbly, fun personality shine through the weight loss now.”
