Gym Group Sunderland at Toll Bar Retail Park in Ryhope will open next week on Tuesday 13 December and hopes the low-cost and community-oriented approach will prove popular with residents during the cost of living crisis and beyond.
The Gym Group has locations across the UK, but its new club in Ryhope will be its first in Sunderland and will offer a range of exercise and weightlifting equipment as well as some free lessons with qualified trainers.
The new facility will be open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and gym manager Andrew Kelly, 39, from Fulwell, can’t wait to get started.

He said: “The Gym Group has been around for a number of years and we have around 220 clubs in the UK, but this is the first one to open in Sunderland.
“Our aim is to provide a low cost but high standard of service. With a cost of living crisis and bills that are so high, people are trying to spend less, so I think it’s absolutely crucial to have a place for people to go for low cost. Important. Many people know that if you are stressed or just need to get out of the house, the gym and exercise can really help clear your head and can completely change the way you think.
The gym also hopes to provide residents with a sense of community, and will be partnering with local charity The Red Sky Foundation, which helps provide defibrillators across the city.
Andrew added: “We want to work with a local charity to raise awareness of the importance of defibrillators and how they can potentially save lives.
“We’re planning a number of charity events over the next few months as well as raising awareness and raising money for a great cause. We want to build those connections and give the gym a real sense of community.”
Gym Group Sunderland will be officially opened on Tuesday 13 December at 12pm by former Sunderland football legend Julio Arca.
