Apple unveiled new M2-powered MacBook Air and MacBook Pro models at its WWDC 2022 event earlier this year. The arrival of the new notebook brings a plethora of changes and additions to enhance your user experience. While the M2 chip is common in both MacBook models, you must consider a variety of other factors before deciding which one to buy. If you want to buy the latest products from Apple, you should pay attention to a few things. Here are some reasons why you should wait for the new M2 MacBook Air instead of buying the M2 MacBook Pro.
The M2 MacBook Air is a brand new machine with a brand new design and a lot of advantages over the M2 MacBook Pro
Before we dive into it, please note that both the MacBook Air and MacBook Pro models are very powerful in terms of processing power. Apple released the new M2 chip this year, which offers enhanced CPU and GPU capabilities. You can check out our reasons why the M2 MacBook Air is a better choice than the M2 MacBook Pro.
Design and Aesthetics
One of the main reasons you should wait for the new M2 MacBook Air is the design and form factor. Apple ditched the wedge design this year for a balanced approach. The new M2 MacBook Air now resembles the 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro models. However, compared to the “Pro” model, the laptop is fairly thin and lightweight. If you’re a student, the MacBook Air is the clear winner when it comes to portability.
Display and Notch
While the display quality of the M2 MacBook Air and MacBook Pro models is more or less similar, the former comes with a notch. As mentioned, the notch also contributes to a design similar to last year’s M1 Pro and M1 Max MacBook Pro models. The notch makes room for a larger 13.6-inch display compared to the M2 MacBook Pro’s 13.3-inch display. Despite the larger display, the MacBook Air has a smaller footprint than the MacBook Pro. That’s because the Air has thinner bezels on all sides.
MagSafe charging
While the MacBook Air and the MacBook Pro with the M2 chip were released side-by-side, only the Air came with Apple’s new MagSafe charging technology. This is one of the most anticipated additions that Apple is bringing back to the MacBook lineup. On a MacBook Pro, you’ll use the USB-C port to charge the device.
function keys
On the new M2 MacBook Pro, you’ll find the Touch Bar instead of the function keys. Although this is an innovative feature, many users still prefer physical function keys, according to Apple. On the other hand, the new M2 MacBook Air has function keys that most users prefer.
FaceTime camera
The new MacBook Air features an upgraded 1080p FaceTime HD camera for great shots. The M2 MacBook Pro, on the other hand, features the same 720p FaceTime HD camera. With most of us still working from home due to the ongoing global pandemic, the need for Zoom or FaceTime calls has never been greater. Since then, the MacBook Air’s front-facing camera is better than the Pro.
New color options
The new MacBook Air with the M2 chip is available in four colors. If you’re looking for something new, it’s best to opt for new colors, and you can get the latest machines in silver, space gray, starlight, and midnight. The MacBook Pro is available in the same color options as its predecessor – space gray and silver.
price
The new MacBook Air features a new design, the latest M2 chip and MagSafe add-ons, and the company is priced at $1,199. The new M2 MacBook Air has the same old design and nothing special, and Apple is pricing it at $1,299. Considering the changes brought by the MacBook Air this year, the $100 price difference is huge. While the new MacBook Air and MacBook Pro models have the same chip inside, the latter has better cooling. The MacBook Air is silent because it doesn’t have a fan, and Apple has throttled the machine’s performance so it doesn’t get hot. MacBook Pros with M2 chips have fans that provide enhanced CPU and GPU performance. In the end, it all narrows down to the type of work you plan to do on the notebook.
