CANFIELD, Ohio (WKBN) – Animal charities at Canfield, Ohio boarding kennels hosted an adoption clinic Sunday for their 50 dogs in need of homes.
But animal charities say their volunteers are what makes this happen – they come every day, some even twice a day, to walk the dogs and give them much-needed attention.
“We are very grateful to the team of volunteers we now have, who are more than what we see here,” said Jane McMurch of Animal Charity.
The time volunteers spend with the dogs helps build healthy bonds for them, McMurch said.
“These are times when dogs need to learn that they are loved and safe, and volunteers do that,” McMurch said.
Edward Pomponio is one of those dedicated volunteers. For the past eight months, Edward has gone to the shelter twice a day to walk one of his favorite dogs, Pinky.
He said they shared many special moments while he helped care for her.
“Just like they love you and you love them, it’s unconditional love, 24/7, and you just can’t get enough,” Pompeo said.
On Sunday, Edward walked with Littlefinger one last time, and then she went to her forever home.
“You just don’t want to leave them, but the goal is for them to have a forever home, and that’s going to happen today,” he said.
Pomponio said that if someone had the opportunity to volunteer with the dog, it would be more rewarding than anyone imagined. He plans to continue working with the other dogs in the shelter until they find new homes.
On Sunday, a total of five dogs were adopted.
