NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4080 reportedly getting price cut in mid-December to compete with AMD’s 7900 XTX

According to China Motherboard Channel, NVIDIA will make an official price cut on its GeForce RTX 4080 graphics card in mid-December.

According to reports, NVIDIA is preparing to cut the price of GeForce RTX 4080 in mid-December, reconsidering the threat of AMD Radeon RX 7900 XTX?

So far, NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4080 graphics cards have been underwhelming in terms of price/performance. The card has the biggest price increase we’ve seen for an 80-series card at $1199, and while shipments are lower than the high-end RTX 4090 cards, the new cards don’t seem to be selling well and are still in good supply at retailers . Even scalpers who got their cards on launch day have been struggling to get rid of them.

Now, according to a report from China Motherboard Channel, some sources point out that NVIDIA is preparing a price cut for the GeForce RTX 4080 graphics card. The price cut is expected to be announced in mid-December, when AMD’s Radeon RX 7900-series cards hit retail shelves.

Motherboard Channel also reports that the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4080 price cut is not due to upcoming competition from the Radeon RX 7900 XTX and RX 7900 XT graphics cards, but rather because NVIDIA is rethinking cost and performance values to achieve better sales numbers on the cards . Personally, I think it’s a combination of the two, since at $999, the Radeon RX 7900 XTX is $200 less and definitely more appealing to consumers than NVIDIA’s offering. The price cut for the GeForce RTX 4080 also means that the RTX 4070 Ti, which launched in January, probably won’t be priced in the US either, as expected for the $899 “unreleased” GeForce RTX 4080 12 GB graphics card.

We can’t confirm how much NVIDIA will drop the price of the GeForce RTX 4080 graphics card, but we can expect it to be closer to the 7900 XTX, such as $1049 or $1099. Whether the performance will match the Radeon offering remains to be seen, as competing benchmarks have yet to be published. Due to US/EU currency adjustments, the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4080 is now also selling for less than MSRP in the European market.

What do you think is a fair price for an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4080 graphics card?
