Netflix first released blondewriter-director Andrew Dominic’s NC-17 tells the story of Marilyn Monroe.
Starring Ana de Armas as Monroe, the film, based on Joyce Carol Oates’ fictional novel of the same name, is a tribute to the enduring man A reimagining of the professional and personal life of a Hollywood icon.

In an interview with Netflix queuede Armas said Dominic’s ambitions for the film were “very clear from the start – to present Marilyn Monroe’s version of life through her lens.”
“He wants the world to experience not just Marilyn, but what Norma Jeanne really feels like,” she continued. “I found this to be the most daring, unapologetic and feminist take on her story I’ve ever seen.”
As for the writer-director, it’s an examination of someone who is “deeply traumatized,” leading to a split between her public and private selves, and for “a celebrity who’s often publicly displayed, may cause additional trauma.” As such, “the film is very much about her relationship with herself and with another character, Marilyn, which is both her armor and what threatens to devour her.” “
De Armas said that during the 47-day shoot, which involved spending hours in the hair and makeup chairs, she not only read Joyce’s novels, but also studied hundreds of photos, videos, audio recordings and films. The result is a film that “is not linear or conventional; it aims to be a sensory and emotional experience.”
She added: “Sometimes we’re immersed in her body and mind, which will give viewers the opportunity to experience what it’s like to be Norma and Marilyn at the same time.”
The director also stated that the film’s rating exceeded NC-17. “I seem to put myself in situations where people think I’m provocative, but that’s never what I want to do,” he explained. “I just wanted to make it as clear as possible. My goal is to make you fall in love with Marilyn.”
The film isn’t the first NC-17 to hit Netflix, but it’s one of the streaming company’s first to receive a rare rating from the Motion Picture Association of America.
