If you’ve been thinking about getting a new dog, you’re not alone—the Kennel Club data shows that the number of people looking for a puppy has surged by about 8% since the global pandemic began.
But with 221 different breeds of purebred dogs to choose from, there’s a lot to consider before you choose the newest four-legged dog for your family—whether you want a large dog, family-friendly dog, or a crossbreed.

Different breeds of dogs also tend to have very different personalities – some dogs will happily hang out with just about anyone.
Others form particularly strong bonds with their owners and family members that are non-transferable and that last a lifetime.
Here are 10 of the most loyal dogs, according to the American Kennel Club.
Topping the list of the most loyal dogs is the Akita, described by the American Kennel Club as “very loyal.” A famous Japanese Akita dog named Hachiko waited at the train station every day for 10 years after the owner’s death, hoping that he would eventually return home.

Raised to hunt in packs, the Beagle naturally bonds with other dogs and is loyal to the pack leader – its owner. They also develop deep relationships with their children that will last for the rest of the dog’s life.

Affectionate and outgoing Labrador Retrievers are very loyal to their families, although unlike some of the dogs on this list, they also get along well with neighboring humans and dogs.
