Idaho Humane Society rescues dog from 123.8 degree vehicle

The Humane Society of Idaho said it received five calls Monday asking to keep pets in vehicles with triple-digit temperatures. On Sunday, the Humane Society received nine calls.

BOISE, Idaho — At around 2:15 p.m. Monday, an Idaho Humane Society official responded to a call from a citizen who said that in Treasure Valley, triple-digit temperatures A dog was left in a hot car.

In a video posted on Facebook by the Humane Society of Idaho, the dog can be seen panting in the front seat of the car. The vehicle is registered at 123.8 degrees.

Responders arrived minutes later and left a notice notifying the Humane Society on the vehicle’s windshield. The owner didn’t get back into the car until 3:06 pm, nearly an hour after the call from the public.

The Idaho Humane Society said the dog was fine. However, not all pets are left in hot vehicles during the Gem State summer.

On June 22, a dog died after its owner left it in a hot car in Meridian. Kristine Schellhaas, communications manager for the Humane Society of Idaho, said it was 84 degrees outside but 147 degrees inside the car.

“This death was completely preventable. This person chose to keep their dog in the car, and we really recommend leaving your pet at home,” Schellhaas said in the June 23 interview.

On Monday afternoon, the Idaho Humane Society said in its Facebook post that it had received five calls that day from animals requesting rides in hot cars. On Sunday, the Humane Society received nine calls.

“You don’t want to see your pet suffer. It’s not worth your pet’s life! Please don’t leave your dog in a hot car,” the Facebook post said. “If you see an animal in distress in a hot car, call (208) 343-3166 in Boise, Meridian, Eagle, Kuna and unincorporated Ada counties.”

Last year, the Humane Society of Idaho received more than 400 calls about pets locked in hot cars. The Facebook video is below:

Made nine calls yesterday. So far today, there are five calls: a furniture store, a restaurant, two grocery stores and a local swimming pool. The dog in this video was rescued inside a vehicle with a temperature of 123.8 degrees. A well-intentioned person called at 2.15pm and a humanitarian officer arrived within minutes. Nearly an hour later, the owner got back to the car at 3:06 p.m., read the notice on the windshield and contacted us. Thankfully, thanks to the swift action of others, the pet will be fine, but many won’t. You don’t want to see your pet suffer. It’s not worth your pet’s life! Please stop leaving dogs in hot cars!
