How You Can Help the Sioux Falls Area Humane Society “Empty the Shelters”

Sioux Falls, South Dakota (Kello) — If you’re thinking of adding a new pet to your home, now might be a good time.

Wanda and Darol Krueger came to the Sioux Falls Area Humane Society on Thursday to welcome the new tail wag member to the family.

Their beloved Tigger passed away just over a year ago.

“We missed our pup terribly, so we decided it was time to get another one,” said adopter Wanda Kruger.

The Krugers ended up giving the two dogs a forever home.

From now until Dec. 11, adopters can pay just $25 for a dog and $5 for a cat.

“Typically, our cats are about $65, and our dogs are between $90-$200,” said Dana Konzem, SFAHS community outreach coordinator.

Adoption fees are reduced thanks to the Bissell Pet Foundation’s “Empty the Shelter” campaign.

The Sioux Falls Area Humane Society cares for more than 400 animals.

While this does include homeless people and those in foster care, many are now ready to go home for good.

“As the weather changes and it’s getting colder outside, it’s great that we’re able to hold an event like this because it gets more animals out of shelters so we can keep those outside in the cold The animals brought in need our help,” said Madison Godschalk, SFAHS Special Events and Public Relations Coordinator.

“If you’re interested in adopting, now is a great time to adopt because we have so many animals we want to bring home. Hopefully the holidays will bring them home,” Konzem said.

Adopters must go through a pre-screening process.

You can apply online or in person at a shelter.
