neon white, out now on Switch and PC, is easily one of the best games of the year. Between the anime vibe and Machine Girl’s awesome soundtrack, you’ll find a deliciously stylish speedrun glove that’s both easy to pick up and hard to master. I haven’t been able to put it down for the past few days. Here are some tips I wish I had known before starting.

don’t think of it as a shooter

Publisher Annapurna Interactive may technical bill neon white As “extremely fast FPS”, but it is not the truth. It’s certainly not your typical first-person shooter. Instead, treat each level (which you must complete from start to finish and kill every demon you see along the way) as a puzzle with a solution. Your goal is to find the fastest route and then… successfully complete it.The sooner you remove your brain from doom mentality, the better neon white You can.

intentional placement of cards

you pick up the gun and come in neon white By traversing the cards scattered across the map. But every gun is more than just a weapon. By dropping it, you’ll also gain a one-time traversal ability – a pistol becomes a double jump, a submachine gun becomes a weighbridge, etc.Typically, these cards are placed Exactly Where do they need to be to use them. In other words, if you pick up a gun that turns into a sprint, prepare to sprint.

Your deck is limited

lest you have the wrong idea, neon white is to emphasize no Deck building game. You can only carry two types of cards in your hand, but you can (according to my testing) hold an unlimited number of each card. At the end of each level, your hands will be wiped clean. Of course, you have a permanent sword card, but…

Melee attack sucks

You start every level with your sword, you can’t get rid of it. It’s useless in combat; don’t waste time trying to use it to kill demons. But if you want to save on ammo, you can use your sword to hit a variety of useful in-game items – dynamite barrels, chests (cards usually used to hold guns), and more.

Make sure before trying to perfect it

Even if you know you’re going to finish a level in a bad time, it’s worth trying to the end. Just complete the level to get a bronze medal, show you how long it takes to get a silver, gold or ace medal, and open the option to replay the level and find its gift (more on that later). Beating silver time will spawn a ghost that will re-enact your previous fastest route, giving you a personal benchmark to compete with midway through. Gold will give you level hints, which is very helpful in figuring out how to tighten the ace.If you do this, you will be able to view the leaderboard for that level – this time real Games start. (Beat your friends in milliseconds is a thrill.)

set up gold

at some point neon white You’ll encounter a level gate: to unlock more missions, you’ll need to increase something called your neon level, your measure of all the other fictional characters in the game’s story. You start at number 100. Every time you get a gold or ace medal, you move up one place. Getting gold in the early stages you’ve been through before is much easier than setting it up on the first try later.

looking for gifts

Replaying levels you’ve completed also allows you to find gifts that you can then give to other characters in the game, similar to a dating sim. Doing so builds a rapport with them that eventually unlocks side quests – usually skill-based trials. But only in the act of looking for gifts, neon white It’s more about exploring than racing. No pressure to set a better time. (Once you find the gift, the level is over.) You’re just looking around trying to find a brightly colored box with a bow on it. neon whiteIt turns out to be very, very beautiful when you slow down and admire the view.

Bonus tip: When looking for gifts, grab any guns you have. Also, try to reach the top of the level. You can sometimes see flashes of gifts in the shape of a brightly colored box.

Attack vending machines for extra guns

There are vending machines in some corners of most levels. Playing one will give you a card, usually a hidden gift card that you need to level up. If you’re trying to set a quick time and you have room to interact with the vending machine, you’ve already failed. But these are great for granting extra traversal tricks that allow you to find gifts.

all the explosions will make you

You can drop an assault rifle and place a bomb where the cursor is. neon white It’s true that you can jump over the explosion to launch yourself, but you also don’t need to time the jump. Just standing next to any type of explosive will automatically launch you into the air — and much higher than you’d normally be able to jump. There are ways to use this knowledge to surprisingly useful effects. For example, hitting the ground on a dynamite keg will make you very high.ground impact two Dynamite barrels will send you higher (exact measurements are yet to be determined). And you won’t take any splash damage, so go ahead and experiment with dynamite.

Try not to multitask IRL

because the level is neon white Very short, usually 30 seconds long, you might think it’s an ideal multitasking game — you know, send a few emails, play a level, go back to work for a while, play a level, etc. Well, yes, about that. Once you start playing, it eats up your time before you realize it, and anything you’re trying to “multitask” is completely thrown aside. You are warned!
